NICE Eyes on Evidence - Issue 82 March 2016

This month in Eyes on Evidence

Bystander CPR for out-of-hospital cardiac arrest
A Swedish cohort study found that bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) doubled the likelihood of survival in people who experienced out-of-hospital cardiac arrest.

Effects of antimicrobial stewardship and infection control measures on MRSA infections
A retrospective observational study in Scotland found that an antimicrobial stewardship intervention combined with infection prevention and control measures reduced meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections in hospital and community settings.

Epidemiology of vivax malaria in the UK
An observational study reported that people of south Asian family origin visiting friends and relatives in countries with malaria accounted for the majority of cases of vivax malaria in the UK. Symptoms were most likely to appear during the UK summer months, irrespective of when the person acquired the infection abroad.

Delirium in critically ill people
A meta-analysis reported that critically ill people with delirium were more than twice as likely to die in the intensive care unit or hospital as people without delirium.

Smoke-free legislation and respiratory tract infections in children
A cohort study reported that the introduction of smoke-free legislation in England resulted in a 3.5% decrease in hospital admissions for acute respiratory tract infections in children.
